WordPress 3.0, the thirteenth major release of WordPress and the culmination of half a year of work by 218 contributors, is now available for download (or upgrade within your dashboard). Major new features in this release include a sexy new default theme called Twenty Ten. Theme developers have new APIs that allow them to easily implement custom backgrounds, headers, shortlinks, menus (no more file editing), post types, and taxonomies. (Twenty Ten theme shows all of that off.) Developers and network admins will appreciate the long-awaited merge of MU and WordPress, creating the new multi-site functionality which makes it possible to run one blog or ten million from the same installation. As a user, you will love the new lighter interface, the contextual help on every screen, the 1,217 bug fixes and feature enhancements, bulk updates so you can upgrade 15 plugins at once with a single click, and blah blah blah just watch the video.
Designing in pursuit of being original, or even interesting, can be a foolhardy prospect. Design that strives to be original for the sake of it, and typically at the expense of its real purpose of communication, often falls into a mire of stylistic tropes and shallow meanings.
Many of us have grown up with the old adage that says “if you want something done right then you have to do it yourself”. Unfortunately, there are times when that can be very poor advice.
Good Advice
If you need a website and you know what you are doing then go a head and build it. There is no point in handing the task down to a subordinate who doesn’t have a clue as to what they are doing or hiring a designer to do the job for you if you have the time and want to save money.
Bad Advice
On the other hand, if you are in the retail or manufacturing business and you don’t know how to build a website then you are just going to be wasting your time. There is a nice learning curve when learning to create websites and an endless amount of options that you are really better off spending your time doing what you do best, running your business! Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by tasks that you could easily hire someone else to do for you. It will cost you less in the long run if you hire a designer to work on the website for you as they would be experienced and efficient in their approach at providing the perfect solution for you.
Allow Me To Clarify
Right about now you are thinking you’re set, right? You think I have given you what you wanted to hear and now you’re going to go build your own website because you have a copy of photoshop and your niece can draw. Well, stop right there because you’re forgetting one very important thing. Are you at all creative and do you truly understand how to use the web to benefit your business?
Face it, everyone thinks they are creative so I likely can’t argue with you there, but there is much more that goes behind building a website than links, pretty colors and some pictures. A well designed website is not only visually appealing, but most importantly it is accessible, user friendly and optimized to convert for your business. These are the things that a designer or web developer would bring to your website and the value in that alone is priceless.
In Closing
Let me say it once more. If you know what you are doing then go a head and build your website. However, if you don’t understand how to optimize your website to convert for you business then this good advice doesn’t apply to you after all. Search the web for one of many of the talented designers and allow them to guide you through the process. You’ll be glad you did.
WordPress 3.0 was just released a few days ago on April 3rd. I’ve been testing it since then on a live site, flickthis.tv and it has been great so far. If any of you like being early adopters then continue reading and follow the links below to download it. Remember, this is the 1st beta so try it at your own risk- remember to back up your site and database before doing this.
This is an early beta. This means there are a few things we’re still finishing. We wanted to get people testing it this weekend, so we’re releasing it now rather than waiting another week until everything is finalized and polished. There’s a ton of stuff going on in 3.0, so this time we’re giving you a list of things to check out, so that we can make sure people are testing all the things that need it.
In late 2009 I had the pleasure of getting to know the guys at Premiere Custom, a tshirt silkscreen and embroidery shop. In the beginning I started by doing some graphic work for them before moving on and starting plans to update and relaunch their site.
The goal was to create a website that would not only show the different services the shop provides, but also to showcase the many talents of the artists associated with the shop and provide it’s customers and friends an open door from which they can enter the shop and explore the amazing culture cultivated within it.

Through my work with Premiere Custom I have had the opportunity to meet many great people. In this post I had the pleasure of talking with Tim Toomey of Assault Blog and Assault Shirts.
Assault Blog
